Runes
From Qwiki
Runes play a critical role in most forms of magic within the world of Moridia. Each rune is typically associated with a particular element.
Within the magical system of the world of Moridia, runes must be physical in some way to be used for spell casting. Most commonly runes are etched onto small wood chips, pieces of stone, or sometimes steel, iron, gold or other metals. Some wizards have even been known to have the runes tattooed onto their skin to ensure they never have to worry about being without the runes required of their craft. Since the runes to be used must be created by their wielder, each set is unique and can only be used by the wizard who created it. Because of this, tattooed runes are exceptionally rare. Quorlan and Drathan are two of only nine known wizards throughout Moridia who are known to have successfully tattooed runes upon thier own flesh. Most who study the arts of magic lack the tolerance for pain required to perfectly form each rune on their own flesh while inflicting the pain of being tattooed on themselves. Most simply cannot maintain a steady enough hand while under the duress of such pain. As a result, most wizards choose instead to create a set of runes from a material such as wood. Paper is generally avoided as runes written on paper can only be used once, the power of the magic consumes the paper upon which the runes are written, destroying them and preventing reuse. One of the more common methods of making the runes easy and compact to carry is to carve or etch them into jewelry such as rings, pendants or bracelets, allowing the wearer to have access to any runes he or she needs while not having to carry individual runes in a pouch. This is commonly seen as a good alternative to rune tattooing.
