Jacob Kindle is a fictional writer living on Earth in the year 2008. As an anniversary gift, Jacob's wife Laura gave him a very unusual and unique ring which he now wears constantly. What Jacob doesn't know is that this ring is not originally of this Earth and is imbued with the power to bring Jacob's fictional creations to life. Jacob was wearing the ring when he created the world of Moridia for a series of fantasy novels he is writing, and by the very nature of the ring, caused Moridia to be created within an alternate universe, bringing Jacob's creation to true life.

Jacob and Laura have a young daughter, Willow who has an identical counterpart in the world of Moridia in the young Princess Willow. This fact is what allowed the malevolent wizard Drathan to create a conduit between the worlds of Moridia and Earth.
